Man Utd's squad in summer 1992, the coaches' report: ability and potential in stars
01 · THE WORLD

The world as it was

Pick any club in 34 countries across Europe and South America, from the great sides of the day down to England's fifth tier. Milan in their pomp, Barcelona's Dream Team, a Man Utd side still waiting for its first title since 1967. Or Carlisle.

Squads, finances and expectations start where they really were. The board sets its targets and the fans have their own idea of what the club should be.

02 · THE FUTURE

Every player once

Beckham, Neville and Butt are in Man Utd's youth team. Henry turns up at Monaco, Ronaldo at Cruzeiro, Totti at Roma, Riquelme at Boca. Each of them exists once in your world: sign the teenage Ronaldo and he is yours, and nobody else gets him.

Follow history and players move where they really moved, unless you get there first. Loosen it, or switch it off and let the market decide. Not every wonderkid becomes what he became.

03 · MATCH DAY

Match day, the CM way

The commentary tells the story, as it did in CM 01/02. Pause at any five-minute mark to change the shape, make a substitution or give a shout. Give a team talk at half time and see how each man takes it.

Want to watch it? Switch on the 2D pitch.

04 · THE CLUB

The club around you

Your inbox fills the way it should: the board's vision, scouting reports, rumours in the papers, press conferences, a player unhappy with his lack of games. Your coaches and scouts judge ability and potential in stars, and a man you haven't watched is a guess.

Pre-season friendlies, the reserves, cup draws, European nights. Get it right and better jobs come calling. Get it wrong and the board will let you know.
